The 2017 Solheim Cup Opening ceremony was last night and the opening matches begin at 7:10 AM Mountain Time at the Des Moines Country Club. Television coverage starts today on the Golf Channel at 7 AM. Massive crowds and an incredible competition are anticipated.
In 2011 the Solheim Cup was in trouble. The U.S. had won the last three events and held an 8-3 advantage overall.
The best players in the world were coming from Asia and there was pressure to add non-European nations to the event. The excitement was not even close to the Ryder Cup.
But then the Europeans won 3.5 of the final 4 points to come from behind and win the 2011 Cup. The Europeans won again in 2013 for their first ever victory in the U.S. In 2015 two things happened to add drama and excitement to the event. First was the controversy of a conceded putt between Suzann Pettersen and Alison Lee on day two. Second, going into the final day the United States was trailing by a seemingly insurmountable 13.5 to 9.5 score. But in possibly the greatest finish in any team golf competition ever – men’s or women’s – the Americans won the last five matches for a 14.5 to 13.5 victory, the closest match ever in the Solheim Cup. Hopefully 2017 will build on the excitement and provide a great competition.
