The PGA tour will be in Ontario Canada this week for the RBC Canadian Open at Glenn Abbey.
Headliners include Dustin Johnson (world #1) and Matt Kucher (world #12) who just finished runner-up in the British Open. Other popular players include Bubba Watson, Ian Poulter, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, and defending champion Jhonathan Vegas.
The Canadian Open used to be a very popular and prestigious tournament and attracted most of the best players in the world. Jason Day did win this tournament in 2015 on his accent to #1 in the world but is not competing this year. It is difficult for players to play in the British Open and travel back to the mainland for this week’s tournament. All tournaments scheduled the week after a Major have difficulty attracting the strongest fields.
History: The Canadian Open past winners include Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman, Tom Weiskopf, Jim Furyk, and Tiger Woods.
Jack Nicklaus never won the Canadian Open but was runner-up 7 times from 1965 to 1985.
Lee Trevino won this championship twice with one victory occurring during his magical 1971 season when he won the U.S. Open, British Open, and Canadian Open. Tiger Woods matched this “Open sweep” in 2000.
Favorites for this week: Dustin Johnson (7/1), Matt Kuchar (11/1), Brent Snedeker (22/1), Jim Furyk (20/1), Bubba Watson (28/1), J.B. Holmes (40/1).
My pick: Dustin Johnson.
Dustin has been out of sorts since his injury at the Masters. He missed two cuts in a row before the British Open. He played well last week and was at -3 going into round 4. He didn’t finish well but I take that with a grain of salt. He was in the top 10 but you can’t catch the leaders without taking chances. When you are more aggressive good things or bad things could happen, especially on a course like Royal Birkdale that has high rough and difficult bunkers everywhere. Dustin is trending back towards his form as the best golfer in the world and I expect him to play well this week.
