The PGA Tour Championship was the culmination of the 2016-2017 PGA Tour year and proved to be an exciting finish for the true golf fan. True, Xander Schauffele is not a household name but he played well, made many crucial putts, and birdied the last hole to beat Justin Thomas who had put on on a charge over the back nine and just missed a 15ft birdie putt on 18 that would have put him in a playoff. Schauffele won roughly $1.5M for this victory and finished the year ranked #12 with $4.3M in earnings and two victories. As shown on the list below, he was one of only 6 golfers with multiple victories this year. It was a great playoff run as he finished third in the final Fed Ex Cup points list which was worth $2M. That means he won $3.5M for the week. This was more than the $2.8M he had won for the year coming into the Tour Championship.
By finishing second, Justin Thomas clinched the $10M prize for the Fed Ex Cup and most likely Player of the year honors with his 5 victories and leading the PGA Tour money list ($9.8M)
The final round was a disappointment for Jordan Spieth who just missed too many putts to get into the mix although he was within 2 on the back nine and finished second in the Fed Ex Cup.
Paul Casey started the final round in the lead and just could not get anything going, missed a few crucial putts, splashed one in the water, and finished with a disappointing 73 for fifth place. Being winless for the year, this would have been an amazing finish to his year but he just didn’t have it.
