After the Northern Trust second round we have Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, and Jordan Spieth tied for the lead. They are three of the top 5 Fed-Ex players going into the playoff and are showing they are ready to challenge for the Cup. Justin Thomas (ranked 2) is in 10th place and still in strong contention.
During the Fed Ex playoffs it is difficult to track in real-time each player’s position relative to their Fed-Ex points. Only the top 100 players will make it to the next round and for those players on the bubble it is nice to track their position. Unfortunately, the standard PGA tour leaderboard does not show the tournament position and the Fed-Ex position simultaneously. Below is a leaderboard showing both numbers. If you look at Jhonattan Vegas you see on the far right that he started the tournament ranked 29 in the Fed-Ex Cup standings and after round 2 he would be in 4th place.
Other Player Highlights/Lowlights
- Hideki Matsuyama was in first place in the Fed-Ex Cup standings but shot 3-over and missed the cut. He dropped to #6.
- Jimmy Walker is the biggest name eliminated from the playoffs. He came into the tournament ranked 101st and needed a strong tournament to advance. Unfortunately, he missed the cut and dropped to 110. His off season starts early.
- Phil Michelson made the cut at even par and is currently ranked 51st in the Fed-Ex Cup standings. He is positioned to make it to next week and the third round of the playoffs as one of the top 70 players. However, his concern has to do with the Presidents Cup. He is outside the top 10 and must rely on Steve Stricker selecting him with a captain’s pick in a week. Phil hasn’t had a top 10 finish in the last 5 months and Stricker is looking for improvement before he picks Phil. Making the cut is great, but not the quality Stricker was looking for. Phil needs a couple good rounds and a strong tournament next week if he wants to clinch a spot on the Presidents Cup.
- Bubba Watson made the biggest move after shooting -5 and sitting in 5th place. He started the week at 113th and surged to 49th place. During an interview early in the week Bubba said he was going to take 4-5 months off after the playoffs. It looks like he will have at least one more week of play.
