There are a number of golf rule changes being proposed to start Jan 1, 2018. Some seem like such no-brainers that they should be implemented immediately. Other rules possibly have secondary impacts.
My favorite proposed change is that you can leave the unattended flagstick in when your ball is on the putting green, and there is no penalty if your ball strikes it. Currently: Loss of hole (match play) or two-shot penalty (stroke play) if you strike the flagstick with a stroke from the putting green.
Having seen many excellent chips rolling slowly towards the hole ricochet away rather than fall in the hole that I don’t think it is an advantage to leave the flag in the hole for most putts. Therefore, the only impact I can see is that it might speed up the pace of play because you can putt a long putt without waiting for someone to tend the flag. They should implement this rule immediately.
What rules would you like to see changed?
